Shows four men at side of lake with trout and grouse. Housed in a birdseye maple frame with white mat. Examined out of frame and measured 32"w x 24"h. SIGHT SIZE: 21"h x 29"w. Nicely decorated three runner salesman sample coasting sled with stenciled runners, hand painted blue seat with red pin striping and floral decoration. Front metal runner may be steered with a metal bar that is stamped "Pat. Nov. 20, 1894". PROVENANCE: Sled accompanied by original patent papers from the U.S. Patent Office along with drawing and specification letter. Patent was issued to James H. Holt of Fairfield Center, Maine. Bowed front, one drawer dressing mirror with line inlay to mirror frame and lined inlay across front drawer and edge. Appears to be mostly walnut veneer with ogee type feet. The drawer is dovetailed and has two brass knobs. Mirror with four gold flower decorations in corners. SIZE: 19"h x 13 1/2"w x 6 3/4"deep. ELLIS. Wood appears to be walnut. Shaped top swings and unfolds to reveal green felt surface bordered in walnut. Base has built in compartment with card tray. Paper label states "JOHN A. ELLIS, MANUFACTURER OF ALL KINDS OF FIRST CLASS FURNITURE GORE STREET BETWEEN 5TH & 6TH STS EAST CAMBRIDGE". This maker is listed and has a sewing table illustrated in Antiques Magazine, April 1968 with label. Base of table has carved deep shell skirt with vines and curving legs terminating in caster feet. Unframed picture shows a three-mast ship in full sail (James A. Howes) sailing from left to right in a green-blue sea. Title on bottom left and signed lower right. SIZE: 12"h x 21 3/4"w. CONDITION: Untouched as found condition with chipping to edge, small hole in sky and two small nail holes to bottom edge. Dirty and in need of some restoration. 9-79435 (4,000-6,000) 32. FINE SWING HANDLED NANTUCKET BASKET BY FERDINAND SYLVAR. Oval basket with carved swing handle and oval wood base. Paper label with makers name and address "97 Orange St Nantucket, Mass.". SIZE: 5 1/4" h x 8 3/4" x 6 1/2". CONDITION: Excellent. 9-77711 (1,500-2,000) 33. EXTREMELY RARE AND UNIQUE 19TH CENTURY SAILORS WHALEBONE AND MAHOGANY GAME BOARD. This small charming game board, obviously rendered by a sailor, consists of alternating checkerboard squares of whale bone and mahogany. The sides of the board are framed in mahogany, the outside trimmed in whalebone. A green piece of felt has been attached to the back. This is an absolutely charming, as well as rare piece of sailor art. SIZE: 9 1/4" square. This delicate board is approximately 3/8" thick. CONDITION: Excellent in all respects with some moth damage to the green felt on the reverse. 8-87055 (2,500-3,500) 34. OUTSTANDING POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH. Large tooth titled "Whaling" has three ships, two flying American flags , and two small boats with men. Two whales are seen in water. SIZE: 8 1/2"l. CONDITION: Very good. 9-79073 (1,500-2,500) 35. SIGNED 18TH CENTURY CHERRY NEW ENGLAND SECRETARY. This mid-18th Century secretary features nicely developed Ogee feet with four lip molded graduated drawers having a slant lid which opens to reveal a full compartment of nine drawers in various sizes. A fine contrasting striped inlay separates the various drawers. The top of the secretary with two molded glass doors with six panes each. The top being nicely molded. The top of the secretary inscribed boldly in ink "C.W. Hathaway Andover, ? MA." SIZE: 39" w x 31"h to writing surface x 42" h to lower case x 38" h to the top. CONDITION: Generally good with some minor restoration and very old refinish. Brasses appear to be original. 8-86956 (8,000-10,000) 36. OUTSTANDING, RARE AND UNUSUAL QUILL WORK WOODLAND'S INDIAN HOODED DOLL CRADLE. An important piece of Indian folk art. Birch bark with wood rockers. Shaped sides have white quilled flowers with green leaves. Written in quills "From Aunt Emma to Little Sam" on one side and the other side says " From Aunt Emma to the Baby". Inside has two flowers with vine. Front end has bird with six white flowers and green leaves. Back end has three birds with five large flowers and blue berries. Top of hood has two birds on vine with other flowers. Two shaped walnut rockers. PROV: Family history knows of this being in a Farmington, Maine house for at least 50 years. SIZE: 10"h x 19"l x 10"w. CONDITION: Cloth which held cradle to base with stitching has come unattached. Hood needs restitching also. Some quill loss but this piece is in remarkable good condition. 9-77750 (3,000-5,000) 37. CENTRAL PLAIN INDIAN QUILLWORK CRADLE COVER. Outstanding example has bright orange/red quill panel to top of hood. Colorful stepped triangular pattern in green, purple and yellow. Twelve fringed sections are also quillwork. Quillwork lines go down 9" on sides with hide backing. Remainder of cover is a patchwork quilt. SIZE: 27" overall length. Inscribed "Fittz". Cane has whalebone shaft and finely carved whale tooth ivory handle in the form of an eagle's head. Silver collar. SIZE: 31 1/2"l. CONDITION: Good. Some cracking to handle.. 9-79069 (1,250-1,750) 44. WONDERFUL CARVED FOLK ART CANE. This Victorian carved wooden cane features a carved fish, dog, etc. along the shaft. Fall front desk has multi-drawer and pigeon hole interior. Tall bracket base with central drop pendant having scoop-carved, twelve-pedal pinwheel. Original bat wing brasses with bail handles. SIZE: 42" h x 39" w x 18-1/2" d. CONDITION: 9-79398 (5,000-6,000) 46. FABULOUS LARGE OVAL BLACKSMITH TRADE SIGN. This wonderful late 19th Century painted trade sign depicts a blacksmith shoeing a horse. The young lady with wide rimmed straw hat and puffy white blouse patiently stands by the blacksmith looking on awaiting her horse. In the background an attendant works inside and to the right in the distance is a charming house with a fence around it nestled amongst the trees with low mountains or hills in the background. The scene is all within a golden black self-framed border. The painting is on a huge prime panel with a reinforced pine bar on the back to keep it from warping. The painting has a self framed border of gold and black and is believed to have originated in the CT or NY area. It was once deaccessioned from a museum. SIZE: 47" w x 36" h. CONDITION: Nice crusty old alligatored finish. There are a couple of small nail holes, one on the top and bottom and one to the mid left. OUTSTANDING POND MODEL OF A SLOOP. Rigged with sails having white and red hull, painted deck with cabin. SIZE: 36"h x 46"w x 9 1/2"d. CONDITION: Very good with some stains to sails. 9-79086 (3,500-4,500) 49. OUTSTANDING GIRONDALE FEDERAL MIRROR. Top crest has large spread eagle with two coiled snakes. Bottom pendant has large seahorse. Wonderful gilt surface. SIZE: 44" h CONDITION: Excellent. 9-78701 (10,000-15,000) 50. OUTSTANDING FOLK ART DOUBLE PORTRAIT OF BOY, GIRL AND DOG. Picture shows the eldest of two children of Alexander D'Autremont and Abigail Dodge D'Autremont, being two of their nine children who lived in Angelica, New York. Their father was a royalist from France who immigrated to build asylum for the King and Queen of France. Their mother is the daughter of a Revolutionary War soldier who fought at Bunker Hill. Portrait shows young girl in pink dress next to younger brother with white outfit. Her arm is around his shoulder and his arm is around their dog. Left side has red draped curtain. Painting is untouched and in original condition. Framed in 19th century frame which has been with the painting for a very long time but not of the same period as the painting. This painting descends directly along the family line and has never been offered before. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a clean fresh folk portrait. SIGHT SIZE: 24 1/2"h x 29 1/2"w. CONDITION: Excellent. Needs cleaning. 9-79762 (10,000-20,000) 51. EXCELLENT NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER HANNAH ELISABETH WINGATE 1841 ROCHESTER, NH. Border with flowers at each corner, garland of flower at top and vase of flowers below. 7 Alphanumeric rows. Reframed, comes from a nice Troy, Maine home. SIZE: 17" h x 16" w. CONDITION: Excellent. 9-77788 (1,000-2,000) 52. OUTSTANDING NEW YORK TWO-PART BUTLER'S SECRETARY WITH BOOKCASE TOP. Bottom section with large butler's drawer having side by side mahogany veneer panels. Opens to reveal inlaid interior with multi-drawer and cubby holes. Three drawers below with shaped skirt and flaring French feet. Top section with two glazed doors having geometric mullions. Three shelves and top crest has inlaid oval with spread eagle and stars. Three wood finials. PROV: This comes from a Pittsford, VT family whose descendents include the Palmer family and North families. The piece is signed and dated and indicates for whom it was made in red ink on the bottom of the butler's drawer. It is very similar to the secretary in the James Monroe State reception room at the White House. SIZE: 106" h. Case width is 45-1/2" x 20-3/4" CONDITION: Very good. 9-79399 (15,000-25,000) 53. FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY LOOKING GLASS. Raised gilt Phoenix bird in crest. Nice carved scroll. SIZE: 38"h. CONDITION: Restoration and chips to crest. 9-79135 (2,000-2,500) 54. RARE DECORATED FIREMAN'S PARADE HELMET. A painted fireman's parade top hat lavishly and colorfully decorated on the frontice of the top with two lovely maids carrying a long garland of flowers. All framed in a wreath of gold and brown leaves. A banner at the top reads "Friendship" in gold letters on a blue banner. The back of the fireman's parade helmet, in large gold letters, reads "F.A.". The hat itself painted black. The under part of the rim painted red with the inside of the hat lined with a wool fabric hatband. The interior of the top painted with the initials "LJB" and "F.E. CO.". Accompanying this lot is a book entitled "Chief Engineers Report of 1864 for the City of New York". The "Friendship" within the book (pg 150, reports that the Friendship Hook and Ladder Co., #12, was stationed at North 78 East 13th St. and it indicates that as of the printing of the book their hose was in good condition. The truck was in good condition, built in 1862 by Charles E. Hartshorn. Present number of men - 40. In checking the directory of the men for the year 1864, I find no one on the rolls with the initials F.A. or L.J.B. It is therefore obvious that both of these people were members of the fire department before or after this period. Parade helmets were decorated hats worn by firemen during their annual musters and parades. SIZE: Brim is 13-1/2"l; hat is approx. 5-1/2"h. CONDITION: With the exception of some minor imperfections such as a couple of small rim chips, the hat is generally in very good condition. Book is in well used condition. The cover page, just prior to the title page is missing. Numerous penciled and inked notes have been made in the book under various fire departments over the years. 9-79822 (7,500-12,500). 54A. WONDERFUL EARLY 19TH CENTURY TAVERN SIGN DEPICTING GEORGE WASHINGTON ON HORSE. This outstanding early 19th century tavern sign for the Scribner House was originally found in Massachusetts. The black tine three-board sign self-framed, retaining its original molding frame depicts George Washington in his general uniform atop a great white stallion all within a landscape of trees. This is the central image in the middle of the sign with "Scribner" above the "House" below in yellow. On the top left and right of the sign panel are gold stars. The reverse of the sign- also "Scribner House"- depicts a vignette in the center with a very early sulky horse and driver. The sign retains what appears to be the original old rusted forged hardware on either side. SIZE: Approx. 38" square. CONDITION: The paint on the side with George Washington is worn but still quite strong. The paint on the reverse side is much worn and also various scuffs and rub marks on the paint and on the frame. Overall sign has great appearance. A wonderful patriotic image. 8-87083 (14,000-18,000) 54B. WONDERFUL 18TH CENTURY MINIATURE 1 DRAWER PAINT DECORATED BLANKET CHEST. Lift-top opens to reveal a well with robin egg blue paint. The bottom fitted with a full-length drawer which when removed reveals a secret compartment behind. This painting came out of Erie, Pa. with a provenance of Mary Cramer Currie of Canton, Ohio. It was in bad condition with missing section in the upper wallpaper area. On the back of the canvas was written what we have put in the title. Sarah's last name is obscured. The painting shows a small boy in dress on a brown and white rocking horse. Green and brown wallpaper and molded floorboard behind. The painting has been restored and relined and placed back on its original stretcher in its original frame. These whimsical but very powerful depictions were crafted of concrete and steel sometime during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The extraordinary offering represents a unique opportunity for what is most assuredly the most significant folk art work in concrete ever offered. Tail has metal reinforced top and bottom edge. Signs of modern paint to surface that is 20% on fish and still is on fins. Large carved wood ball on both top and bottom. Large directionals are attached to 12 /12" rod. Presently, the weathervane is attached to this rod with a retaining ring which has been fused over time to the rod. The weathervane is being sold for the organization that owns the building and through their research there is some indication that prior to the turn of the century this vane had been moved from a building in Newburyport, Mass. A weathervane has been found in a photo with the same ball configuration and fish silhouette but it has not been verified that it is this weathervane. Research is ongoing. SIZE: 56"l. The fine black lacquered with much metal ornamentation of gilt ormolu work. The fine brass and gilt works are engraved on the inside lyre as well as the pendulum. RARE NAUTICAL PATENT MODEL FOR UNIQUE SAILING VESSEL. This unique and innovative patent model or salesman model was for a wind energy top driven boat. A French creation and referred to as the Hypotan. Aluminum or tin cylindrical tubes with baffles were arranged on a central post. The wind passing through these baffles cause the drive shaft holding the wind prop to turn which drove the propeller thus powering the boat. A highly interesting and unique approach to a wind powered boat. Shell of the boat appears to be painted wood with a deck covering which appears to be brass. The wind baffles are made of either aluminum or thin tin. There is no patent date on the model but we assume it dates sometime to the late 19th Century. SIZE: Vessel is approx. 17" l and approx 13" to the top of the wind prop. CONDITION: Mechanism works, paint has nice patina and appears to be generally in good condition. 9-79470 (2,000-3,000) 168. EARLY 19TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF BALDING GENTLEMEN ATTRIBUTED TO MICHELE FELICE CORNE' 1752-1845. Painting depicts a balding gentleman with ruffled white collar in black coat with brass buttons. Possibly a sea captain. It is framed in a frame from the period but probably not the original frame. Painting is unsigned but the structure on the reverse has an impressed inscription which includes the date "1814" and other words which can not be made out, may be the name of the sitter. A note attached to this lot indicates that at one time a photo of the painting was shown to someone at the Peabody Museum who identified the artist as being Michele Felice Corne. The Peabody had a very important and extensive exhibition in 1972 of Corne's work and a very fine book featuring numerous examples of his work and descriptions with information and history accompany this lot. The painted style and use of shadows to delineate the facial features of this painting very much coincide with the illustrated works of the artist. SIZE: 17" x 23 1/2". Each state has colorful flower with needlework identification of state and flower type. Beautiful color in a wonderful layout make this quilt one of the best we have seen. SIZE: 83" x 90". This horse weathervane was found in the barn of Jason Mendence on Back Street in Nantucket. Five generations of this family lived in this house. The vane was purchased from the estate. History of Mendence indicates John B. Gardner married one of the girls and was a housepainter, a photographer and made whirligigs. Weathervane shows horse in running form with tail straight out with greenish yellow surface, iron rod and wood ball. SIZE: 41 1/2"l x 15"h.
